MEET THE ARTISTS // Art for All 3

Art for All 3 Participating Artists
March 8 and 9, 2013

Heather Divoky has a BA in Art History from Appalachian State University. She takes her cues from outsider art- such as Adolf Wölfli- and the art scene from her hometown, Wilmington, North Carolina- especially Minnie Evans. Divoky uses primarily pen and ink to create her works, gaining inspiration from categories of things- such as the constellations, four seasons, and the zodiac signs. She works in minute detail, and uses bursts of colors to compliment her precision. All of these factors combine to create a unique style to her art. The motivation behind her work, however, is to take the viewers of her art into another world, or, at least make them smile.

This contemporary visual artist is known for her bold style and liberal use of color. Recently, however Kinga Baransky has been exploring more muted, simple palettes, even working with only one pencil, in her newest pencil portraits.
At Art for All 3, Kinga will be showing her dog illustrations done in pencil on paper. Simple, clean, realistic drawings of our furry friends.

The Wooden Lantern by The Charm School Dropout
The Charm School Dropout features mixed media collages made from old photos, ephemera, memorabilia, advertising imagery, fashion design, manners, beautiful people, and epoxy resin and then housed in custom made salvage wood frames. The Charm School Dropout has recently started making a new product, salvage wood handmade lanterns. The lanterns run on small 7w nightlight bulb and are perfect for a child or adult. They contain 100% salvage materials and a vintage children's book illustration. Lanterns come in three different sizes. 5" x 5", 7" x 9", 9" x 12"

The Art of Candy Pegram - Folk/pop art paintings done on wood and then antiqued with a patina...to give it an old feel.
Artist Statement: I begin each painting with a naive idea of what the final outcome will be. Consequently, a piece will evolve through layers of color, often sanded off several times to achieve a desired depth of feel. I favor images with hefty strokes and bold outlines, new yet familiar, evocative of a powerful collective pop culture memory of childhood toys, cartoons and characters. Currently I use wood as a canvas for its unique texture and inviting irregularity which tends to forgive my doubt and reward my instincts. My paintings tend to strike a random yet familiar chord that hopefully reminds us of our youths; when life was saturated with color and endless wonder.

Wood by Forrest - wooden bowls, vases, wine bottle stoppers, candle holders, urns and other custom items that are all made on a lathe. Most of the wood used is local wood from trees that have been taken down for one reason or another. (but not, just for the wood) Some of the items require "dry" wood which allows the artist, Brad Forrest, to venture into exotic woods from all over the world.

My work is an investigation into memory, identity, and the transformative value of communication. I use narrative therapy approaches such as letter writing, journaling, and story telling as a starting point to visually express both lived and imagined experiences. I create pieces in response to new challenges, environments and relationships. As a multimedia artist my material choices and processes vary with each new body of work. - Leslie Pearson

Blue Lime Jewelry is rustic, unique, and one of kind design that can be enjoyed for many years to come.
I am a self-taught independent jewelry artist. I have studied fine art, sculpture, and architecture. I really enjoy working with all these elements into these tiny objects.
My inspiration for Blue Lime Jewelry designs comes from nature, the ocean, and a turquoise trail in the rustic desert where I fall in love with blue lime turquoise. - Eunkyung Kim Cazier

Andrew Halterman
Andrew Halterman is a painter and describes his style as classic folk art.

A self-taught artist and mixed media sculptor, Barton’s eclectic style is admired by many. His work has been showcased in several North Carolina galleries alongside prominent artists such as Ivey Hayes.  On several occasions he has been commissioned to do customized art designs for clients to fit their individual taste and desires.  An avid gardener and fly fisherman, Barton draws inspiration for his artistic designs from nature itself.

Lily Brittany Lane's art is process driven from a curiosity of exploration with materials.  She explores fibers, metal casting, and even relational aesthetics. The content is primarily about sex, death, and power but it is dealt with in a whimsical fashion. There is a general sense of loneliness to the human experience within her art. Containment and freedom are also large overarching themes.

Katie Wright

My artwork is a study of the "flow state", that place where your thinking mind stops and there is just awareness. All current pieces use paint, pastel, wood - with waves and water as subject matter – to explore/represent what it means to be in that "flow".
Some pieces are prints/posters of my paintings, using pattern and repetition to explore that energy. Others are prints of my original work mounted to reclaimed wood from an 85 year old house, using the flow state of the wood to further explore the theme.
Creating art is how I connect with that place where my head meets my heart – where I am no longer thinking or trying, just creating without thought. Each of my pieces is an extension and representation of that feeling. - Katie Wright

Watercolor paintings of ocean and intracoastal scenes including boats and waterfowl, and local area farm and tobacco barns.

Wes Gubitz can capture nature in it’s most beautiful and dramatic moment with images that describe nature’s unfolding wonders. His photography is more then just an interesting scene, it breathes, lives and explodes to the surface that it occupies.  A long time resident of Wilmington, NC, Wes is a self taught artist, sculpter and photographer with both skill and practical experience in these fields of art. Along the way, a strong spiritual sense prompted him to increase his skills in Language Arts, become a licensed minister and earned a degree in Liberal Studies. His proficiency in multiple art forms and the humanities qualify Wes as …..a “renaissance man”.

I work mostly in Watercolor, Pen, Ink, and Pencil. My watercolors are very fun and free. I like to manipulate my paint with wet washes making my works light and transparent. As of now I like to create all original work for my clients because it makes my art that much more special.
Within the past year I have received overwhelming love from my immediate community. I am constantly adding my my list of commisioned pieces which usually consist of me putting my illustrated spin on family portraits, pets, wedding photos, and many other things. My works range from $25 for small original illustrations to $200 for larger original watercolors.
My art is defined by this great community.
love, Carleigh

Tallulah Jewelry designs incorporate gemstones, freshwater pearls, and sterling silver to create distinctively organic designs.  Some styles use silk thread and unique knotting and weaving, while others exhibit advanced wire-wrapping and silver-smithing techniques. Each piece is totally unique, so the wearer can be confident they are the only person to flaunt this design.

Jillian Nicole Boivin
As an artist living and working at the beach in North Carolina, my artwork is greatly influenced by the coastal landscape. This inspiration is shown in both the subject matter I depict, as well as the bright and vibrant colors I use to recreate these images. I am most influenced and inspired by the minor or craft arts including quilting, embroidery, stained glass, and mosaics. Specifically, the emphasis on pattern and intricate detail in these forms of art speaks to my aesthetic. The majority of my artwork has an obvious tactile quality, which records my personal experience in making the piece. I integrate unusual materials into my work to create a fresh and unique approach to representing imagery. All of my artwork is original and I do not make reproductions because my goal as an artist in this community is to make affordable, hand-crafted artwork that will bring joy into one's home. - Jillian Nicole Boivin

Adelia Spivey
I design & create bright, colorful, whimsical themed acrylic paintings.  I am the sole creator of my art.  Sometimes I'll sketch out my designs on paper first but most often I go straight to the canvas and start there.  Each painting is a unique labor of love, and I thoroughly enjoy the process of creating them all the way through.  When I was in art school, I had an equal love for painting and metalsmithing.

Kat Fairbank
My paintings range from realistic to impressionistic, mostly in acrylic paint.  I play with color and express my feeling in paint.  My earlier work is mostly realistc landscapes and seascapes.  My favorite subjects are musicians and pets.  My pallette is brighter now and my style shows more movement and expression.

Paige Puckett Pottery
I make functional wheel thrown and hand built ceramics, but have also been exploring wearable pottery. My pottery reflects a draw towards understated beauty and sturdy compositions. I’m attracted to simple designs and shun the distraction of too many textures and colors. My photography reflects my love of gardening and nature. I didn’t start out at a photographer, but as a gardener who increasingly noticed the small things, like a robber fly hanging mid-meal from the bean supports. I sell 5x7 and 8x10 prints and bird and nature note cards, and prints primarily of bugs, nature and birds.

My subject matter ranges from the seascapes that first inspired me to the landscapes that remind me of my childhood home in the mountains of rural Pennsylvania. Instant Artifact

All of my jewelry is handmade, with no bought/pre-made components or beads. Most of my work is made from silver, copper, brass, and enamel. The feeling I get from creating one-of-a-kind pieces of wearable art is my lifeblood.  - Artist, Ashley Roderick

My Invisible Ink

I started My Invisible Ink years ago for my graphic design portfolio and after 8 years I have switched gears to follow my passion for art and painting. My medium consists of acrylic painting on wood which I hand cut and build. I use plaster sometimes for more terrain texture along with stencils, transfers and sometimes metal finds like nuts and washers. Other material sometimes finds its place in my art such as lace and fabric. Each piece may have similarities, but remain unique. - Artist, Bethany Hadden

Kevin Duval
Kevin Duval is a sculptor of glass, metal, and wood. Here he describes his work:
At its simplest, my art/craft is the selecting, forming, polishing, and assemblage of a limitless variety of reclaimed, scavenged, and salvaged materials. Discovering, and showcasing beauty in items and materials that have been discarded. Using materials that have already been aged, to create pieces that will live their own history. These pieces include wall art, window art, sculpture, functional art, and furniture. A piece has turned out well when it has gone the direction in which I intended, but has taken its own path.

Second Wind Threads
Every piece of art that is shown is a piece that was created within a year's time. Within the year, I found my favorite medium to use is acrylic paint. My favorite content is surrealism and figure drawing. - Artist, Courtney Rivenbark

Utilizing thick, bright, chaotic brushstrokes alongside three-dimensional form, Lewis’ recent series of paintings showcase an interpretation of sound and emotion illustrated on canvas with paints, inks, cassette tapes, reel to reel tape and more. Allowing texture to breathe through a palette of color and composition, Lewis creates vibrancy and intrigue though his unique sculptural painting technique.
-Translating his experiences to the canvas results in many layers. The paintings are tempting to touch. “It’s a diverse work of thick-textured, heart-felt and striking images; a visual marriage of chaos and minimalism.”  -Encore Magazine

Lucky Accessories is designed and created by me in my studio in Raleigh, North Carolina. Most jewelry is made in limited quantities, making each item one of only a few available. I enjoy making pieces that have special meaning to the wearer, such as my pearl and wire wrapped peas in a pod pieces which are often worn by sisters, friends, or by moms to represent their family. The soldered, vintage wallpaper ‘little reminder’ pendants remind the wearer of those little things that often go ignored such as laugh and balance, but are so important to enjoy everyday life. The ‘Lucky Penny” pieces of cupped and colorfully enameled pennies uses something old and used, and creates something fun, meaningful and new. I love repurposing objects such as coins from around the world, and vintage wallpaper in my jewelry to add to the “story” of each piece. The latest addition to the materials I use are laminate and metal countertop and interior design samples. I am inspired by color, nature, and by finding old everyday things and making them into simple and sweet jewelry.

My work is ever changing and I find myself constantly exploring different mediums and surfaces. You'll see an eclectic range in my art. Some pieces convey light, airy happier thoughts while others evoke darker emotions that come from deeper places. I find it rewarding to have the opportunity to share my work with others and hear what the pieces say to you. It's as if the pieces have voices of their own. The meanings and interpretations can unfold into unknown territories which keeps what happens day to day in the studio fresh; an exciting journey with mystery and spontaneity.

JC Cardwell

color and black and white photography, acrylic paintings, giclée prints of original oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings, and woodcuts
I have been painting with oils, acrylics, and making woodcuts for over fifty years and photographing for forty years. I graduated in 1980 with an undergraduate degree in art/art history and studied art photography with the West Coast Masters including Ansel Adams, Brett Weston, and Morley Baer, in the late 70s and early 80s. Many of my paintings and photographs have a strong presence of linear, architectural visual elements. I have always been drawn to the De Stijl, Precisionism and Abstract Expressionism art movements by artist such as Piet Mondrian, Composition with Yellow, Blue, and Red; Charles Demuth, I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold and My Egypt; and Barnett Newman, Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue?

Lou Humphreys/Amara Nata Jewelry
Personally designed and handcrafted jewelry, made of all natural materials. Each design is unique, never to be duplicated. Lou Humphreys will also be selling her mini canvases - paintings, inluding personal scriptures.

High school art teacher, 2011 Encore best artist award.
Paintings, sculpture, and illustrations.

My main materials in jewelry are silver, copper and enamel. A lot of my work is simple silver cut outs and chased pieces. My enamel pieces get more complicated with cutting, shaping and enameling in my kiln. At times I find old items in antique stores and add them to my handcrafted pieces in order to add a touch of my love for antiques. I take pride in the fact that each piece is handmade and one of a kind, even if I try to replicate a piece it never comes out the same. When I am not in my studio I am continually seeking out new ideas at the beach or in nature. I truly have a passion for art and I love that I can make it so people can walk around everyday wearing a piece of that passion.

Last fall I was a finalist in the Martha Stewart American Made contest, and have done many juried indie craft shows over the past three years. I love making things that are fun and maybe even surprising, but also are as functional as they are beautiful.

Metamorphosis Metals
I combine traditional metalsmithing techniques with nontraditional materials to make objects that are both unique and wearable.  I use a variety of techniques, including; soldering, forming, forging, torch and kiln firing of enamel, sawing, and stone setting.  My most recent series is made with tiny plastic model train figures set in hand fabricated metal diorama-like settings.

Thomas Lewis

I have been drawing for years and have mostly focused on ink and acrylic art for the past two years. I love shading and stippling and my favorite medium is ink. Tattoo art is my inspiration for most of my pieces. I try to incorporate detail within a bold design.
